DAMPNESS or DEFECT SURVEY
A damp survey or dampness survey is our most common type of defect survey by far. A dampness survey is only so named so the damp industry can pigeonhole their services. Really, a dampness survey is a 'defect survey' using 'building pathology' to determine the cause(s) of particular symptoms - such as dampness.
You may well be asking the wrong question in your internet search. Search for the above terms, you won't see any damp-proofing companies offering their services.
Damp or preservation companies DO NOT inspect below floors!
Damp or preservation companies DO NOT inspect outside!
Determining the cause of defects uses a skills set which is developed from an in-depth understanding of construction and building pathology - how buildings fail - and cannot be achieved by attending a 3-day course.
Surveys from a little as £395.00 plus travelling up to around £595.00 depending on the size of your property - i.e. how long it will take to examine externally and internally.
Knowledge of old buildings
To understand why something has gone wrong, you need a well developed understanding of how old buildings were built including the materials they originally used and the materials commonly used in their repair today.
Without this, trying to determine the reasons for failure is just a stab in the dark but dampness surveys undertaken by preservation companies aren't interested in fixing defects anyway.
This is a specialist skill which is ONLY developed through experience. It is straight-forward enough to build something but to be able to determine, only from visible symptoms, what is going on within a structure or below ground, is not something you can learn in a 3-day course learning about selling treatments to cure rising damp!
To be able to impart knowledge without using overly technical terms is an important skill.
Reports following a dampness survey are written in a discursive manner, like we are discussing the issues face to face, which enables you to have a greater understanding rather than reading a list of findings or technical jargon.
Surveys are now offered in Swansea, Cardiff, Neath, Carmarthen, Llanelli, Newport, Barry, Abergavenny, Cwmbran, Chepstow, Ross-on-Wye, Gloucester, Cheltenham, Stroud, Cirencester, Bristol, Bath, Chippenham and surrounding areas.
