Timber & Dampness Survey
A timber & damp survey or dampness survey is our most common type of defect survey by far. A dampness survey is only named so the damp industry can pigeonhole their services. Really, a dampness survey is a 'defect survey' using 'building pathology' to determine the cause(s) of particular symptoms - such as dampness.
You may well have been asking the wrong question in your internet search. Search for the above terms, you won't see any damp-proofing companies offering their services.
Damp or preservation companies DO NOT inspect below floors or inspect outside. They stop at symptoms they can blame on rising damp!
We will arrive at your property dressed to climb into the attic or below the floors to inspect it completely and fully.
Surveys from a little as £395.00 plus travelling up to typically around £595.00 depending on the size of your property - i.e. how long it will take to examine externally and internally and to examine photographs and site notes and compile the report.
To understand why something has gone wrong, you need a well developed understanding of how old buildings were built including the materials they originally used and the materials commonly used in their repair today.
This is a specialist skill which is ONLY developed through experience. Being able to determine, only from visible symptoms, what is going on within a structure or below ground, takes years of experience in building pathology.
To be able to impart knowledge without using overly technical terms is an important skill.
Reports following a dampness survey are written as if we are discussing the issues face to face, which enables you to have a greater understanding rather than reading a list of findings or technical jargon.
