About Heritage and Design Ltd
John Durie trained as a building surveyor, gaining a first class honours degree from Glasgow Caledonian University, and always intended to work in conservation.
Having worked in various Glasgow building consultancy practices, he now provides specialist building surveying services, primarily for traditional properties, through Heritage and Design Ltd.
John gained valuable conservation experience working for the National Trust for Scotland as an Assistant Regional Surveyor in the West Region based at the historic Greenbank House and dealt with projects and maintenance issues in unique and important buildings such as Alexander 'Greek' Thompson's Holmwood House and Hutcheson's Hospital in Glasgow; Weaver's Cottage in Kilbarchan, The Tenement House in Glasgow and surveyed properties in and around Brodick Castle on Arran.
John also successfully completed a £2.6M Historic Scotland funded Conservation Area Regeneration Scheme (CARS) conservation project approving grant funding, providing advice to building owners, training professionals, contractors and householders in traditional skills. He was also instrumental in setting up a Conservation of Masonry course at 2 local colleges.
How many damp 'specialists' have examined a roofspace. Very few building surveyors even venture into the difficult-to-access, dirty place. But it can provide so much vital information.
