Energy efficiency

Energy efficiency can be achieved in many ways.  It should not just be considered in terms of sealing draughts and insulating.  We regularly survey houses that have been recently refurbished and supposedly efficient that have uninsulated pipework that leeches heat everywhere.  This is not visible and only sometimes detectable by the difference in temperature but we use thermal imaging which is extremely sensitive.  We can detect heatloss in pipework below floors, embedded in walls and ceilings.

While most of these don’t result in heat loss as such, since the heat is still within the fabric of the property, the heat being produced is not reaching its intended destination – your radiators – so it is not efficient in this case.

Heating controls are another way to improve efficiency and provide flexibility whether by using TRVs (thermostatic radiator valves), room thermostats, electronic systems such as Hive or Nest or replacing an old boiler or introducing part renewables.

Maintaining ventilation os vital in keeping a house a healthy place so please don’t seal draughts in an effort to save money as it is seldom that straight-forward.
